A walk around Halifax

A walk around calderdale yesterday found a few birds
but mainly quiet apart from lots of Curlew which I'm
   always happy to see anyway.
LEO, Curlew, Song Thrush, Greenfinch quite a few to be honest,
Nuthatch, Treecreeper, GSW, Pheasant, Kestrel, Chaffinch, Great &
Blue Tit, Skylark, Meadow Pipit, Bullfinch, theres a few birds here
but was still a lot quieter than normal and were hard to spot.

Great pictures Dave, especially the juv woodpecker inside the hole. A nest I'm following in Bankhouse Wood near Salterhebble must be at about the same stage, as the adults deliver food without going inside now. I can only look up at it though.
Where are Belgrave Woods?
I know Pepper Hill above Claremount, we were taken there for picnics as kids.

Hi Steve, Belgrave Woods is only what I call it because its behind the Belgrave club, not really a woods more of a copse but all that
area above Claremount Rd which you'll know as pepper hill and the small park that's there is awash with wildlife at times, a bit like soil hill good days and quiet days and nothing at all days.

Is it a trick of the light or does the owl have yellow iris, making it short eared? Ear tufts a bit short too.Any more shots of face or open wing? I could be barking up the wrong tree. Photos hard.

And any more front on of pipit. Or shot of whole hind claw.I know juv meadow can have thin flank streaks similar to tree.

The Meadow pipit has a long hind claw

Sorry to disagree Pete but its a Meadow Pipit, look at the length of the hind claw, a Tree Pipit would be much shorter. Ok it has thin streaking on the flanks but a certain amount of Meadows also can show this feature, also Tree Pipit tends to kook very thin.

Yes Nick, I can see that you are right. Earlier comment deleted. Time for me to 'retire' I think. All the best, Pete

I wouldn't go that far Pete, I find Tree Pipit very difficult, we just don't see that many in Calderdale. I had to copy the photos, blow them up and go over all the ID features to be sure. All the best Nick D.
