Tree Sparrows

These are said to be doing well at Jay House Lane (Clifton.) A resident said he had watched four successive broods being fed by adults. Some nests are under his troughings. (It was a surprise to me too, but they are definitely tree sparrows - there are apparently no house sparrows breeding in the area.)

There was a flock of at least 14 tree sparrows in a hedge a few fields away this lunchtime, but there was also a big female sparrowhawk about :-(

There was also a big a hatch of butterflies, 9 species, details on the other blog.

Earlier in the year, the spadgers were utilising the gentlemans house and some of the boxes in the garden. They were all feeding just in the vicinity of the two houses. I saw no evidence of them venturing further afield, neither to feed, nor to prospect for nest sites. There are several nest boxes up and down the lane, and it would be good if some of them became occupied and the Sparrows were able to spread out from this site. During the days that I was up there, the Sparrows would disappear for periods of half an hour or so, giving the impression that they had moved "off site" but I think they were just resting up in the trees and roof space.
