Needed a long walk on the moors in the sunshine ; saw quite a variety of birds but disappointed by the lack of curlew and lapwing. Has anyone else found this around Calderdale?
However saw
1 male golden eye
1 golden plover
3 tufted ducks 2m,1f
Numerous grey lag and canada geese and mallard, ofcourse
2 curlew only
2 lapwings
Many skylarks and mipits
3 male wheatears luring me down the path presumably far away from their breeding area
4 twite at the feeding station(3 had bright pink rings above pale ones on the left leg; the 4th one had no rings I could see. some of the others may have metal rings on the right leg. perhaps someone could tell me where they were ringed. I hadn't appreciated just how difficult it is to see their legs)
4 willow warblers
2 oystercatchers
Several pheasants
1 swallow
1 mistle thrush

I've seen plenty of Curlews in the Upper Calder Valley - Erringden, Walshaw Dean, Gorple and Swillington.
Twite colour combos (care of Sean Gray's excellent website grayimages.co.uk) can be found at

Not sure how up to date this is though?
