Lesser Pecker
Came in tonight to find an answerphone message from Geoff Smith asking me to post a recent sighting of Lesser Spotted Woodpecker on here. The bird has been seen twice over the weekend, on both occasions around a pylon behind the last house on Elland Park Road before you get to the wood. If anyone needs further details please contact me by e mail and I'll pass your request to Geoff.

Lesser Spotteds are reported at intervals from this exact site.
We were shown a nest in a dead tree near the pylon once. The tree has since fallen and rotted away.
Are they in Park Wood all the time, only noticed now and again? Or do they move away, and if so, what attracts them to this particular patch of woodland? It looks like so many other areas where this bird is never noticed.
I think they have been nesting in park wood for at least 30 years but they are very elucive and people dont allways look for them at the right time of year. Its relitivly quiet and a good selection of rotting trees, not cleared away by the council /forestry lot.
