Roils Head

14 Herring Gulls and 1 Great Black-backed Gull >NW over Pellon/Roils Head this afternoon. Also 1 Stonechat at Roils Head.

Not for the faint hearted this posting for Nick Dawtery who found this severed head of a badger at Highroad Well Moor. It seems badger baiters are still operating in Calderdale? The remains are being sent off for analysis. This is the third badger found dead in the last couple of years in this area.

After not seeing a Badger dead or alive in Calderdale for 37 years I have seen 3 by our road sides in the last year. I am not sure if this is a sign that they are doing well beacuse I always thought them to be rare in Calderdale. One was close to Highroad Well Moor. When I reported one at Clifton to the local Badger grup they said it was not near a sett and feared it may have been dumped.
All sightings should be reported to www.calderdalebadgergroup.co.uk.

I think its a common misconception held by quite a lot of peole that wildlife crime issues are a thing of the past, they certainly aren't, remember we had a pair of peregrines robbed this year.

It may be quicker to e-mail me, as I am the Chair of the Badger Group and also deal with Wildlife issues on behalf of the Council.

Sadly we are still getting digging incidents on a regular basis. The young badger in Nick's photo has had it's head removed from the body with a sharp instrument, probably a spade and the muscle and ligament tissue had been severed cleanly
