Hi Dishfish

I don’t know too much myself but what I do know is that the bird was not at Oxenhope but Oakworth! It turned up on garden feeders on 29th Oct and was photographed by the finder just in time before it was seen to be taken by a Sparrowhawk!

The photographs are here:

Could be wrong but I don’t believe that it is a “first” for Yorkshire as it states on this web page.

The irruption began to be recorded in the UK end of July / early August with at least 30 reported in the northern isles in this period….. presume that this bird was part of this?

Sorry I don’t know more.

With respect, Dave, there have been others in Yorkshire. (I have pointed it out to the B.O.G.)
In John Mather's "Birds of Yorkshire" he lists several during the shooting and stuffing era of ornithology, plus two more recent ones, one in the 1970s and one in the 1980s. Still a super-rarity, though, and one I wish I had found!
Thanks for info about this year's irruption.

Hi Steve
I have also seen the refs in Mather, Chislet, Nelson etc and also pointed it out last night! Assume these reports were accepted.... the latest described sounds good!

Interestingly just on the pager is:

Another reported from Yorkshire today, again a male at a garden feeder and at Bilsdale in the North York Moors (where the Tyne Tees transmitter mast is). Present for two weeks.

Between us we really do need to check these xbills as the 2bc's do seem as if they may be working through. I have just been listening to a recording of the flight call on Dutch Birding just so i have best chance!

Best wishes
Dave

Credit where it's due - I remember Andy C saying just a couple of months ago to keep and eye out for these, as he had a feeling one might turn up!
