Brambling and Siskin

My first Brambling of the new year was on our feeders this morning along with lots of finches, but only 4 Redpolls in the mob.

Then took a walk round to Lee Dam this afternoon. 2 Mistle Thrushes in the churchyard at Lumbutts, a Great Spotted Woodpecker in Shaw Wood and 14 Siskin on the catkins at Lee Dam. The dam is still frozen over, apart from the area where they broke the ice yesterday for the annual new year swim which seems to get later and later into the new year. No ducks on the water though.

Good to get Brambling Jeff as well as Redpoll. Few and far between on our feeders as grey squirrels seem to demolish or empty the seed feeders. We have plenty Blackbirds on the lawn, one regular Mistle Thrush and this afternoon a Redwing came in to feed but it was very wary and soon off!

I have never seen bramblimg anywhere at Jumble Hole, or had redpoll on the feeders here. And I'm probably little more than a mile away from you!

Weird. We used to have a large Brambling flock through the winter when Stansfield View Hospital was there. Since it was demolished and the trees/shrubs removed we only get ones and twos now. Probably other factors involved too but it's a coincidence.
