I have a rather tatty copy of Birds of Britain & Europe by Bruun, Delin and Svensson which is now dropping in bits. What is the best field guide to birds in the UK to replace it with ? I don't rate photo guides so could someone suggest the best field guide that uses drawings ?
TIA

Collins Bird Guide - streets ahead of anything else these days, get the softback for field use and the large format to truly enjoy the art work.
Birdlife of britain and europe by hayman and Hume,The mac millan guide to bird identification by harris Tucker and vinicombe
You were right about that flu bug Paul just as Nick is right about the field guide. Its the bible for virtually everyone out there right now.
Thanks guys
Looks like the Collins bird guide it is.
Andy...I hope that comment does not mean you got the flu bug ?
He did, and so did I!
Paul,
Amazon are listing the 2nd edition of the Collins guide (hardback) as being published on the 3rd March 2008, though you'll probably want a first edition!
Ian
Take the publishers date for anything with a pinch of salt. Publishers rarely publish anything on time. I have had 10 copies of a mushroom book on order since Dec 2006 at a pre publication offer price. It was supposed to be published in Jan 2007, then May, then August, then Dec....latest date sent to me yesterday is August 2008 !
