Willow warbler,to start off
if i was on the isles of scillys in october and saw it briefly i would say it was a.....
What about juv Spotted Fly. ?
or a oddly marked juv robin,some orange on the breast behind the twig(apart from the side of the breast) also some faintly round the face.

It could be, it just looks pale and grey with no speckling unless its the light.
If this was at Spurn it would get a few hearts pumping
I would have expected a juv robin to have a much darker bill, certainly towards the end of it.
Thats right Matt , the bill is usually black.This bird is also showing a fairly wide split eye ring.
Leaving aside some dastardly trickery I am left wondering what this is. I don't believe it is any of the species mentioned so far (although I wouldn't entirely rule out Willow Warbler - plumage is bizarre though). The head shape, bill structure and eye/bill relationship is wrong for Robin. Those things also rule out Spot and Red-breasted Fly. It is not a Blackcap. There does appear to be orange on the sides of the breast, it is very grey on the head it has got this split eye-ring. I'm thinking Common Redstart maybe, but the bill looks a bit thin and yellow - other things fit. I'll go and have another think - I might even look in my yank book. Very interesting ....

My vote would be a juv Chiffchaff. I have seen a similar photo recently of a Chiffchaff, which from a different angle the grey on it's head looked bright blue. A second photo revealed it to be a Chiffchaff without doubt.

The shop only had avocet models in and even after painting it I couldn't get it to perch in a tree...
I also was looking at photos of juv redstarts last night and a birding friend also suggested redstart.
Wouldn't a redstart be showing red on the underside of the tail (see the middle photo)? I'm in for chiffchaff or willow warber, but not a clue which......!
i agree with mark d Head shape and bill looks like a chiffchaff to me having extracted a few juvs out of nets.
OK .its a Juv Chiffchaff but feet do look pale.(ie willow warbler)
Thanks Mark and Sean. I checked out some photos from the Lincolnshire bird group of juv chiffchaff and they show the same split eye ring and orangish tinge on the wing. I've only seen them in adult and post moult autumn plumage before.

Other than some obscure rare - which is unlikely, I think Chiffchaff is correct. The photo at http://www.lincsbirds.co.uk/album/displayimage.php?pos=-6182
and the one before of the same bird are educative.
Matt your point about the tail is good - I missed that. The bill is not right for Common Redstart either, too fine.

Well spotted and photographed Ian, even if we,re not sure what it is it certainly got everybody dragging their books down off the shelf.
