curlew

heard in my back yard tonight sounded distant but still could have been the starling on my roof. if it was then its up by soil hill also heard little owl again down by the stream (an area of gorse and shrub usually the best place to see the little owl)

starlings do a lot of calls (not saying youve not heard a curlew though)
many years ago on the scillies at the evening log in the porthcressa,they got round to green sandpiper and a bloke shouted '1 calling over the mermaid pub',everyone looked surprised as its a good record in late october.when the recorder got to starling everyone shouted their counts and one bloke shouted ,1 on the mermaid pub roof,calling like a green sandpiper'

the little owl should be coming out now if anybodys wondering usually u only haer it in winter so thats the best time to look.thinking about it yes it probably was the starling.

Starlings are a bird nearly all of us over look not just on call but also visually. Yet take a good close look and they are a very attractive bird in their own right. Plus any bird which can mimic anothers call is a star in my eyes its much like us speaking two or more languages. Not sure if you've both seen the footage but David Attenborough's film of the Lyra (prob spely wrong but pronounced Liar) bird is spectacular.
Back to Starlings the winner of wildlife photographer of the year won with a picture of a starling flock being hunted by a peregrine.
