Herring Gull
Argenteus of argentatus ??? need to get photo shop but you should be able to enlarge it.??
Tip: Click on the photo then right mouse click on the enlarged photo and select "save image as" then you can open it in whatever program you use for viewing photos.
Collins says argenteus has much black and less white on wing-tip as opposed to argentatus which has little black and much white. My guess is therefore argenteus as it's hard to say whether the back is lighter or darker grey without a reference point against which to judge.
Get some more shots tomorrow Andy - so we have a comparison!! then of course the light will be different. Nearly all the Herring Gulls we get over are above us , even at Swales so always difficult to get a shot of them from above.
Difficult one but concur with Jeff's comments (from Collins)although the head looks very dark. Not sure!
Copies are available at £6.00 each from the GO local store at Woodlesford, Pellon price . Hopefully they will also be available at the Fox and Goose Hebden Bridge ,
