Starlings

Our nephew tells me that there's a starling roost just off Bacup Road, Todmorden not far from the junction with Sourhall Road.  Can't go and see today but will look tomorrow and report back.  But perhaps local birdwatchers are already aware.  My nephew isn't a birder but he says it's a huge flock and has been coming to roost for a few weeks.

Know anything about this Jeff?

These flocks of starlings sometimes attract raptors,I have watched Merlin,Peregrine ,Kestrel and Sparrowhawk hunt these large gatherings.Well worth keeping an eye on......

Hi Sandra. I don't know of the roost at Bacup Road but I'll check it out thanks. Meanwhile we saw a flock of 400+ Starlings behind our house near Mankinholes yesterday. This flock has been building steadily over the last few weeks and is to be seen feeding in the fields around Mankinholes, often with Fieldfares.

We have a few hundred in the field behind our house at Tabor and there is plenty of Sparrowhawk interest. The Kestrels that are nearby residents don't seem to bother. A Merlin would be very nice nice I seem to be an expert at missing/not identifying them.

Many thanks for the report it would be interesting to get a guestimate on the number of birds coming into roost !
