Chiffchaff and Dead Heron EGP. Fri/Sat.

Met up with Dave Tattersley on Fri am and on the way back came across a dead Heron and then we met a regular dog walker who told us that last Sunday 14th, police were down at the pits looking for 2 persons who had shot 2 Herons and she didn't know the outcome,has anyone heard of this incident,this is bad news for the pits.
Chiffchaff singing this morning midway between Brookfoot Lock and Cromwell Lock almost at the same point that Dave thought he heard one yesterday.
SKI LAKE>
2 Great Crested Grebes displaying even a mini water dance, 5 Tufted, 5 Cormorants, 1 Goldeneye (M), 2 Lapwings, 2 Grey Herons and 2 pair Goosander.
REEDBED LAGOON.
At least 11 Reed Buntings, 2 Little Grebes, 2 Coot, 2 Moorhens.
BROOKFOOT>
2 Nuthatch, 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers, 3 Reed Buntings, 2 Tree Creepers,5 Song Thrush, and lots of Wrens,

Nice to see the evidence being left at the scene........"What Heron?"

In fairness to the police steve the heron may not have died straight away of it's wounds. The fact they attended is a positive thing also that someone outside of our group made the call. Mike did you take a close look to see if it had in deed been shot? Perhaps steve d could comment on the value of recovering the corpse at this late stage, steve?

Had a good look at the corpse with Dave and no sign of wound but it may have been a high powered air rifle and of course it had been laid there for 5 days.I will take a photo tomorrow if it is still there.

I believe that if the pellet or bullet is still in the bird then a ballistics check can link it to the gun used.
