Soil Hill

Dull start to the morning but had brightened up by 08:30. Birds generally much higher than the previous day, especially first thing. More birds also passing to the west, directly down the Ogden valley. Still an impressive number of birds moving between 07:00 - 10:15

  • The passage of Meadow Pipits was fairly steady but consistent throughout the morning, only really slowing down after 09:00. A total of 1448 went south, which is my second-best count here.
  • Finches passed in small numbers as well, with no notable counts also 18 Lesser Redpoll is good and 2 Crossbill is only my second record of the year
  • Hirundine movement was almost negligible, with only one flock of 35 House Martins going through, otherwise just a handful of individuals.
  • Two skeins of Pink-footed Geese passed SE, one to the north of the Calderdale area and the other probably going over Ovenden.
  • The highlight of the morning was a smashing Merlin that blasted through south, heading off down the Ogden valley.

Yesterday was also a brilliant day, with less Meadow Pipits but more finches passing in good numbers. A much clearer day but with thick cloud passing over at times.

  • Meadow Pipits made up the bulk of the birds, with 1219 going south
  • Some really nice finch totals scattered in with the Pipits, including 121 Goldfinch, 68 Chaffinch and, for this site at least, a very nice 13 Greenfinch
Other birds around included the first Teal of the autumn on the NK Pond, and the family of Grey Partridge (1 adult 5 juveniles) on the middle manure pile on Taylor Lane, in the early morning gloom before sunrise.

Soil Hill

After a few days of poor weather, this morning south-westerlies looked very promising for some good VizMig, and so it transpired. I stayed on site from first light until around 10:30 and had my personal first serious Meadow Pipit morning here. It could have possibly been even better, but a low cloud bank rolled in around 07:30 and didn't clear properly until around 08:00. Although I could still see some birds, there were undoubtedly many more that I missed because of this.

  • The bulk of the Meadow Pipit movement occurred between 06:45 - 07:30, at one point going through at about 500 birds every twenty minutes. Once the fog cleared the passage of birds had slowed down significantly.
  • Good finch totals also. The count of 26 Lesser Redpoll is my highest for this site, and 29 Siskin is also not a bad result.
  • Hirundines only really got going once the fog lifted, and not in any serious numbers. 19 Swallows and 6 House Martin south is as good as it got.
  • Two skeins totaling 158 Pink-footed Geese passed SE, but both well to the north of the Calderdale area, more likely passing over Harden Moor or possibly even further north.
Didn't get so much time to check for grounded migrants during the early hours, but noticeably a few birds around
  • First Song Thrush of the autumn, before it headed south.
  • Still one adult Whitethroat lingering, as well as at least six Chiffchaff, including four together.

Pink-footed Geese

The first observed autumnal move over Calderdale on 12th September with 27 over Ogden and 11 over Whiteholme - all in an >E / NE  direction.

13th September - 192 reported today from five skeins observed, with some duplication, from Norland, Cromwell Bottom, Ogden, Fly Flats, Blackstone Edge and Cold Edge. Again in an >E / NE direction with 60, 20, 23, 8, 50, 31.

Shibden Park

3cy Lesser Black-backed Gull.  It has the bright white head and almost adult bill (just a few dark smudges) of a 3rd winter bird. But most of the '2nd summer' brown wing coverts have not yet moulted.

Cold Edge etc

Not been able to find much these last few days but a very nice Spotted Flycatcher at the top end of Cold Edge today, late morning. We have had a good number of reports of these the last couple of weeks as they continue there travels to Southern Africa. It's a long way to go for a small bird....and then hopefully return next year !

With this recent spell hot weather there has been numerous reports of Common Lizards in Calderdale. We always struggle to find them, even though we know where to look ! This the first one we've found this year. Very obliging individual that did not scuttle away and seemed happy to pose for a photo.

Soil Hill

After a few days of easterlies and fog, was hoping for a bit of VizMig this morning, and was rewarded with a three-figure Swallow count and a few other goodies in a five-hour session on this Hill this morning. A total species count of 57 is my best-ever total for a visit to this site, in the company of Chris King.

  • The highlight of the morning was an Osprey that drifted slowly south around 10:30. Sadly it then veered back NE and eventually started soaring distantly over Harden Moor, before heading east into Bradford. Frustratingly, it never managed to cross the border into Halifax
  • Steady trickle of hirundines this morning, with 109 Swallows heading south, with also small groups of House Martin and Sand Martin mixed in.
  • Lots of wagtail movement, with 18 Pied Wagtails on the Bottom Cattle Fields, with two more heading south. Also 5 Grey Wagtail moving south, the first of these species for the autumn, and a single Yellow Wagtail early morning. The Yellow Wag flew south in a group of wagtails calling, but frustratingly when I checked photos, I photographed the wrong bird...
  • Slight finch movement, with 30 Siskin going south in three flocks, and 4 Lesser Redpoll; a single and a group of 3
  • Single Tree Pipit going south calling
Also a few grounded migrants this morning
  • A single Spotted Flycatcher busy feeding in the North Slope Tree-Line
  • Other migrants; 3 Wheatear, 3 Stonechat, 3 Willow Warbler, 2 Chiffchaff & 2 Whitethroat.

Soil Hill

Morning fog meant an afternoon visit up the Hill was on the cards today, and it paid off nicely with a few nice bits.

  • The highlight was just my third Soil Hill Hobby which flew NW over Bradshaw after upsetting the local Swallows.
  • Migrant numbers were still decent, with two Whinchat, two Wheatear, three Whitethroat, two Willow Warbler and a single Chiffchaff

Still 2 Swifts about here - usually between 7 and 8 am as happened again this morning, then they disappear for the day. At this rate I might manage a September Swift - hopefully.

Stodfold and Hunter Hill

It turned out to be quite a morning after early morning mist was slow to clear. The small conifer plantation just off Lane Head Lane was 'buzzing' with activity. It was impossible to count the number of birds working the tree line and wondered if they had arrived overnight and got grounded in the mist and light drizzle. Coal and Blue Tits formed the bulk of the birds along with Great and Long-tailed Tits, even Goldcrests, Nuthatch, Great-spotted Woodpecker and a few Chaffinches. There were a good number of phylloscs with them, again impossible to count, including both Willow Warblers and Chiffchaff. The prize birds were two Spotted Flycatchers.
Everything was moving so quickly and in and out of the trees, an amazing sight but not easy to get to grips with or get reliable counts with so many birds present.

I left them to it and headed up Carrs Beck. Big raptor heading over the golf course and up towards Hunter Hill at 09:55 - cream crown Marsh Harrier. Quick text to BS who I guessed would be up the top there somewhere and managed to get the bird over the moor a few minutes later. Well done Bri.

Can things bet better - well they did today- with an Osprey over at 10:45, heading high along the east side of Hunter Hill towards the gap in the hills at Balkram Edge. Also over there -  1 Swift, lots of Swallows and House Martins, Goldfinch and Linnets and Green Woodpecker.

No camera today... bins and scope enough to cope with though I did get a distant video of the Osprey but it's just come out as a speck !

Certainly a morning to remember - it's not often like this birding in Calderdale !

1 Sparrowhawk
16 Starlings
3 LBBG's >S

Fly Flats and Withens Head

Late afternoon check once the mist had cleared, though a blustery wind and intermittent heavy showers.
1 Kestrel, 2 Ravens, 1 Swallow, 1 Meadow Pipit, 4 Carrion Crows, 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull and a Mallard.
At least 17 Wheatears around the site with approx 11 in the area of Robin Rock, 3 near the boat-house and another 3 on the res'r walls. Probably more hidden away in the conditions.

Withens Head watch-point was devoid of birds apart from 1 Canada Goose, a Kestrel and 3 Swallows.

Lee Mount - 11th August

Several sighting of  Swifts with 2 over early morning, perhaps the same ones early afternoon and up to three later in the day. One juvenile Buzzard over, as well as a Sparrowhawk mid afternoon. Also 2 House Martins mid afternoon.

Yesterday I was fortunate to see a Red Kite over Hunter Hill late afternoon. Always a bit special.

Cold Edge

Juvenile male Stonechat with deep orange flanks

Juvenile Linnet (1 of 2). Field guides do not seem very interested in juvenile Passerines, and I have not found a good description of juv Linnet. Two things were noticeable in the field: tameness - they perched closer to me than adults would have done; and they were paler than adults. The photo shows reddish-brown flanks, brown greater and lesser coverts, and pale bordered median coverts.

Round and about

Last few days - quite a few Wheatear moving through some of our upland sites by now - with more to come ! Stonechats and Whitethroats seem to have been doing well with several juveniles about near Ogden, Wainstalls, Cold Edge and Ovenden Moor. A single Curlew was still on the moor near the wind farm this afternoon.

4 Swifts this morning has been the normal count around Lee Mount this year - the few we have will soon be heading off back to Africa though we can still get the occasional one even into September.

A nice surprise this afternoon was a Black Redstart near the wind-farm car park. It seems to be a regular late summer/autumn arrival though at times they can be very elusive. It was with a Wheatear this afternoon. They can be found on stone walls, rocky areas. Upland farms are always worth a check at this time of year.

Other late summer migrants are also starting to move through with Willow Warblers and Common Redstarts (not so common nowadays) also starting to show. Three of the latter were near Ogden golf course yesterday.

Whitethroat: 1 female, 2 males

Wheatear: 2 adults

HUMMING BIRD HAWK MOTH

A beautiful humming bird hawk moth seen from our window in Walsden yesterday, flapping furiously round our car.  (Well, I know it's not a bird but it was the size of a small bird!) It didn't linger long though.

Whiteholme Reservoir

Had a couple of visits to Whiteholme this week. The reservoir is full to the brim, with gallons flowing out of the overflow. However, the center 'island' is still showing so that alone should be enough to bring a few birds in over the Autumn.
  • At around 10:15 three Common Tern flew slowly SW across the reservoir, before disappearing over the hillside. At 10:21 they returned, this time much higher up and calling, before heading off NW. Please excuse the sloppy photo editing, I did it on my phone.
  • On the 24th a Whimbrel flew over heading SWish. Calls were heard four times, but the bird was not seen.
  • On the 24th a juvenile Little Ringed Plover was present on the island. Today an adult was present on the remnant shoreline in the NE corner.

On the 24th I also called in a Ryburn Reservoir to check out the recent Little Egret seen there. It arrived while I was there but was lost behind the trees and I couldn't find it again.

Copley area.

This afternoon, despite the threat of rain it did stay just about dry.

Walking alongside the River Calder, looking up above North Dean Wood it was really good to see loads of Swifts (maybe 60+ or possibly double that number - they are impossible to count in those feeding frenzies) all feeding high over the trees. Just further up river, near the viaduct 40++ House Martins were also busy along with just a few Swallows though we didn't locate any Sand Martins with them.

A Buzzard went high overhead carrying prey and 2 female Goosander were on the river with two Chiffchaffs still in song.

Late afternoon a drake Common Scoter turned up at Ogden Reservoir. A nice find JJL.

Hardcastle Crags

Not many birds found in the crags today but did manage a couple of 'gems'.

Target bird was Spotted Flycatcher - we found a pair - just before we returned to the car park.
Best I could do with my Panasonic Lumix.

Also a Woodcock flushed as we walked through the woodland. It did two circuits then disappeared into the bracken.

Warley Moor / Ovenden Moor

A single Drake Common Scoter 'sleeping' on Fly Flats res'r this morning which I scoped from the top road. Tricky at a distance in the rain but it did keep popping it's head up to secure identification. Distant waders too far away in the conditions though there were still a few Curlew about. Lots of Swifts feeding over the water and the upwind on the west facing hillside.

Sad to see a fully fledged juvenile Lapwing with a broken wing - maybe flew into a fence line. Adult was still in attendance. It was sad to leave them to it though the injured bird was still feeding well but chances of survival are probably nil.

An Oystercatcher on Ogden this afternoon, 2 Grey Herons, 6 LBB Gulls, 1 adult Herring Gull and 7 Black-headed Gulls. Not a lot else.
