And more Waxwings
Found 50 Waxwings at Silverwood Walk Pellon this PM, also Bullfinch feeding on berries.
Great pictures Nick. Re: the bullfinches. I am interested in the way they do this. I suspect they were "seed robbing" rather than feeding on the flesh of the berries. Can you confirm this, and what kind of berries?
I make a distinction because as we all know the trees produce berries to be swallowed whole so the seeds are spread well away from the trees in the bird's droppings.
So this seed robbing is a kind of subversion of evolution. I don't know if it's been documented before. I have seen chaffinches and greenfinches doing it as well.
Oh, No! We were driving round the centre of Halifax on Sunday 12.00 - 2.00 - usual waxwing haunts: Hanson Lane and all points off/Savile Park area/Tesco/Fire station/bottom Warley Road etc. Muyst have clocked up 20 miles! Where's Silverwood Avenue then!
My son saw 10 waxwing only 1 minute from home in Walsden today (Monday 29th)on Cranberry Avenue. By the time my husband got out to the area they had gone.
Silverwood Avenue is about 2 miles up Pellon Lane on the left hand side. The birds move about from street to street around Silverwood Walk and feed on the yellow berries. There were 50 there on 28th and only 7 on 29th Nov.
Copies are available at £6.00 each from the GO local store at Woodlesford, Pellon price . Hopefully they will also be available at the Fox and Goose Hebden Bridge ,
