Above - 2 shots of a female Merlin last week on our local moors - it was quite a distance away and I got it through the digiscope. In comparison (top) - what about this photo of a male at Orefordness (Suffolk). It was sent on from David Crawshaw a former (and still occasional Calderdale birder). The male Merlin was ringed as a chick in Yorkshire in 2005 and controlled at Orefordness in the last week or so. Many thanks David.

For those who don't know, David Crawshaw along with Dave Sutcliffe, Alan Mitchell, Bruce Hoyle, Colin Shields and the late Irvine Morley and Vernon Crapnell formed the nucleus of the local birding scene back in the 1970's. This was a time when the Halifax Scientific Society produced the local bird reports and as a result of their work and the subsequent major efforts of Nick Dawtrey we have a virtually continuous series of local bird information dating back to the 18th century.
if you want a really good the view the royal armouries in leeds has the one of the only trained merlins in europe and you can get really close. they are amazing when you get close
