High Royd

Water levels extremely low - just dried mud on a couple of beds. However, birds still around:

- 2 singing sedge warbler
- pr. of reed bunting
- 5 moorhen
- 2 coot
- 1 little grebe
- 1 swift
This could be a fantastic site with a bit of management.

Re: the website, we intend to meet within the next couple of weeks to discuss the future and content of the club's 'official' website (www.calderdalebirds.co.uk), led in the technical aspects by Andrew Crystal. I will publish in advance the time and place for this meeting, so if you have an opinion please try make it along, or at least feed your thoughts to Nick C or myself. If you don't do either the site might not end up being what you want.

I have emailed Nick C twice about this topic (my email is down tonight on my ISP, so I cannot read his response yet). Is the site intended as birds only or is it intended to include all of Calderdales wildlife ?

Until we get chance to ask what local birders want we can't say whether it will be restricted to birds only or not. One thing I am keen to see is some way that records can be submitted via the website and stored in a data base in order to make it easier to write the annual report. I think people who post on the Blog think they have submitted their record, this isn't as straight forward as it seems as someone then has to wade through all the posts and transfer the sightings to our data base. One problem with a web site that allows data entry is potential cost, I believe they can be quite expensive. The undoubted success of the Blog and the keen-ness of one or two people to move on is the catalyst to move forward, we are anxious to hear other birders views.

Hi Nick/all
Have local birders thought of using the Mapmate recording package ? Most moth-ers use this as you can exchange information electronicaly (and create maps)without having to enter the data more than once. Its the RSPB recommended recording package I think ? You can buy cheaper bulk copies of the system, I did this for the Yorkshire Moth Group.

Websites are not expensive to set up or run, BUT if you do get lots of hits then the bandwidth goes up and you sometimes get either slow response to users or the web provider ups monthly/yearly fees.

the website should include all wildlife,mainly because we dont want a zillion blogs for the lot,wildlife in halifax should be in a central place easily accsessable to all with an interest in whatever subject.but to keep the few birders here interested i would like to see photos of past birds and articles/descriptions etc.the easiest way to submit records would be via a dedicated e-mail address then put into the group recorder program.this would be hard work.
