I aint never seen a 'ChiffChaff' like that before. Poor pic or not this could be worth submitting for further scrutiny. (unless it called).
Very strange, could it possibily be an effect of the flash in the low light conditions where the bird was? I notice the pale edges to leaves etc have been "overhighlighted", perhaps the paler super etc has just been over exposed? Speaking with Nick I know he used flash and didn't really get an opportunity to look at the bird other than a quick glimpse through the camera lens. Any of the photograpers out there got any experience of this?
As you say Nick, the flash has picked up on the edges of twigs and leaves where the light was and highlighted the lighter items like the supercillium. With being further back the flash has,nt got into the subject.Unless of course it was a Yellow Browed or Pallas,s,We Wish.
I've never had this happen whilst taking photo's although in all honesty I rarely use flash as it will in most instance's flush the bird. The light on the twigs looks to me to be coming from a different direction ie the right, the rest of the light seems to be from behind and I would suggest is therefore natural light as a result of breaks in the foliage. In short I don't see the super being highlighted by such a way by the flash from the camera. If that was the case then I would expect alot more of the image to be over exposed.
looking in the birdguide book I would throw either yellow-browed, humes leaf or pallas's into the ring. Maybe I'm reading to much into the photo but there appears to be a distinct grey cheek and also on the left hand side possibly a hint of a possible median covert bar. There doesn't from this angle at least seem to be a crown stripe which would of course rule out pallas's. Anyone else care to comment? Nick have you been upto the area since??
Copies are available at £6.00 each from the GO local store at Woodlesford, Pellon price . Hopefully they will also be available at the Fox and Goose Hebden Bridge ,
