My aunt saw a barn owl near Higher Ashes, Cross Stones yesterday evening.

I had someone say the same earlier in the week, at the same location. Wondered if it could be a SEO?
I wondered about the more likely SEO too. Though she does insist it was a barn owl. She's not a birder by any means, but I do know she is familiar with both species if that adds any clarity?
There has been a lot of traditional haymaking (possibly haylage) going on in that area. Perhaps that has attracted a barn owl. Short-tailed field voles are breeding well this year.

You are right Steve re the hay-making (incidentally, the meadow flowers up above Cross Stones have looked particularly lovely this year). She said she was sat in the garden, overlooking the meadow, which had been mown earlier in the day, when it flew up the field and over the farm.
