Withens Clough, Cragg Vale

This aft' I did a circular walk from the Hinchcliffe Arms, up to the res', before taking the path along Turley Holes Edge as far as Higher House (they have applied to divert the public right of way past the renovated barn here), before returning along the brook.
I was hoping for tree pipit and maybe a cuckoo, but all in all it was very disappointing in a cold wind and squally showers.  All I could muster were a pair of stonechats, several willow warblers at various locations and a dipper on the brook.
My circular route was almost thwarted when I discovered the concessionary path across the dam was shut.  I was forced to take a more direct route.

Chris - The work at the dam was supposed to have finished ages ago according to Yorkshire Water, but they haven't bothered to update signs or the web site. Sod communication with the public who have waited and waited for the path to be re-opened.

I know. Not only does it look a complete mess, but what disturbance there has been is colossal. And yes, the access and parking arrangments have been dire. Cragg Vale/Withens Clough is one of my favourite places in the South Pennines and to me the whole thing has been a fiasco.

last time I went up I ignored the car park closed sign as it said closed till whenever and that was the previous month (sorry can't remember exactly when it was but hope you get the idea).

Does this mean you can't access the top end of the res from the car park? Was planning to do my first BBS visit this coming weekend.

You can get to the top end of the res' I think, along the northern side of the res'. They have set up a detour path that avoids the main workings. But the path across the dam remains closed. I ended up hopping over the car park fence, descending into the clough and then climbing up the other side to reach the path on Turley Holes Edge

The car park is still officially closed Nick so it's a walk up from The Hinchcliffe or ignore the car park closed signs. Then use the path diversion that's been in place since you last went up (and before that even!).

Thanks chaps, going to add quite a bit of time to the survey.
