Eastern Jackdaw ?
Tall Andy's Jackdaw at Northowram today, looks good to me for eastern race soemmerringii or perhaps a cross with northern scandinavian race, any thoughts?. Well done to Andy for picking this bird out.
I've been reading about races of Jackdaw following the discovery of this great bird and all races merge into each other
however BWP states that the Scandanavian race C.m. monedula "rarely shows a whitish collar" and Crows and Jays states "often with a faint whitish collar at base of nape"
take your pick of those two comments
now the best bit they both state C.m.soemmeringii has a "distinct whitish line at base of nape" (Crows & Jays) or "distinct white or cream collar" (BWP)
so I think we can safely rule out any inter-grade with the Scandinavian race as any inter-grades are probably not very obvious
this looks like the real thing - unless it has a plumage abnormality causing it to look like the eastern race, but how likely is that?
Copies are available at £6.00 each from the GO local store at Woodlesford, Pellon price . Hopefully they will also be available at the Fox and Goose Hebden Bridge ,
