I suspect the hammers will be a bit more mobile now although still fairly local. What were the fields like? Full of stubble? Ploughed up and re-seeded? Any colonising weeds? I wonder if they return to their territories to roost in the evening, or whether they form larger winter roosts like pied wags and LTTs?
Good to get the Mute Swans Mike - they are quite rare in Calderdale these days!
2 mute's running the gauntlet on the fishing lake at elland the other day.
The fields have mostly been re-seeded, Steve, and are attracting big flocks of Crows,Rooks and Jackdaws as well as Woodpigeons.
I remember Mute Swans being resident in The People's Park in Halifax when I was a lad, and I'm sure Dave does too. Times change and I haven't seen a Mute Swan in (or over) Calderdale for 5 years now.
To add to the Mute Swan comments,a pair arrived at Elland GP on 06/04/09 and stayed around until 13/06/09 and 4 first years arrived for 1 day on the Ski Lake on 17/05/09. The pair that Mike saw flying E were on the fishing lake on 16/10/09 and dissapeared on the day Mike saw them.
