Hardcastle Crags

Treecreeper and Nuthatch around the crags Midgeholme car park this morning.

New bird for me in the crags ! was 1 Little Grebe on the top pond at Gibson Mill. Also a Dipper there (first for the year - have struggled to find any in Luddenden Dean or Ogden) and 1 Grey Heron.
The bird feeders by Gibson Mill were busy with small birds ie.. 20+ Blue Tits, 10 + Great Tits and at least 8 Coal Tits with some Long-tailed Tits around as well.

When Sue and I were at the Crags a couple of weeks back we noticed that a number of trees had been felled around the Gibson Mill cafe area. They did not appear to be storm damaged and were wondering what the reason was for the felling ?

Ww wondered the same thing Paul when we passed there yesterday. I was surprised as these were quite mature Alders good for wintering Siskin/Redpoll and Spotted Flycatchers nest just round there most years. This was also near the spot for Pied Flycatchers some 3/4 years ago but previous work round the mill, removing maturing ash trees may well have taken possible nest sites with them??
I think it is probably good policy to remove some of the sycamores but not so sure about mature alders!
