Montagu's harrier

Report received yesterday from the south of our recording area of a quartering Montagu's harrier. A few observers zoomed to the location, but it appeared the bird had gone. Most likely a fly through.

Also, from earlier in the week, a little egret was a brief visitor to High Royd sewage works on Wednesday evening. First spotted from a speeding car by Andy H, Nick C soon confirmed this uncommon Calderdale visitor. No sign the next morning.

You never know what will turn up next!

Why do we only hear about the little egret 5 days later???

The egret was put out on the mobile phone 'grapevine' as soon as it was seen. If you wish to join the grapevine, then get in touch. By morning the bird had gone, so I'm guessing there was no urgency to get the news out of a bird that had left. I wasn't the observer, so am only guessing.

The bird was located late in the evening and I was able to confirm the identity just before dusk. The message was immediately relayed out on the grapevine. The following day a first light check confirmed its departure overnight.

I checked the site the following morning from first light for 2hrs, reported back via the grapevine that although no sign there is lots of cover. The grapevine costs only 10 pounds for a years unlimited text. I subscribe but with having no car rarely see any of the birds reported its just nice to know what's about. The blog is not really for the purpose of getting news out fast so that people can twitch. person to contact for grapevine is Dave sutcliffe.

Montagus Harrier is a YNU description bird, so a detailed report is needed if its to get past the records committee. If no description is forthcoming then we will just have to forget it.

A species as important as Little egret should in my opinion have been put on the blogg ,to let people who arnt on the grapevine know that auch an excellent species was about....

We usually rely on the finders to put their records on the blog although I do occasionally try to do an update of daily sightings especially for some Grapevine members who don't have a computer.
My computer has been playing up recently so on this occasion I didn't manage to post the sighting. We do need everyone to keep the updates on especially of their own sightings.

Andy it has been put on the blog, if people want to know sooner then I suggest they join the grapevine. Until then my records will go on as and when my work and social life allow me the opportunity to put them on. Anything I find of interest will be reported signal allowing at the earliest opportunity. I had a spell when I wasn't on the grapevine, at that time I was happy just to know the birds had been seen and never did I complain at the speed the news reached me as I had made the descision not to be on the grapevine. At 2.74p per day I think the grapevine is well worth it with or without the time and means to twitch most of the reports. This species is not a first for Britain or even Calderdale so I fail to see what all the fuss is about, if it means that much surely it is worth the money to join the grapevine????
