Round and about today

A long walk /pub crawl plus some gazing out the kitchen window resulted in the following,

1 Fieldfare - Garden, seems to have driven off all the Blackbirds
9 Bullfinch - 4 males 5 females on Slack Common, most I have ever seen together anywhere.
10 Reed Buntings - By the House at Withens Clough
3 Goosander - 1 male 2 females on the Canal near Eastwood
1 Kingfisher - same spot
1 Kestrel - hunting below Stoodley pike

Pubs in order Stubbing Wharf, Hinchcliffe Arms, Fox and Goose, Cross Inn (for those who were wondering).

I haven't a kingfisher at Eastwood in 4-5 years - that's great that they could be back. Nice one.

Nice idea combining some birding with a few pubs, got me thinking of bird themed pub names locally, can't immediately think of all that many. Bird in t'hand over Tod way is one and then there's the Moorcock at Norland of course. Anybody come up with any others?

Saw one at Shaw Plains Lock last September Matt, just along the canal from Eastwood towards Tod. I see Kingfishers at Hebden quite often and at the R. Calder at Shaw Wood/Shaw Plains but not between these locations - i.e. Eastwood. Wonder why not?

That's a good number of Reed Bunts at Withins Clough. There's usually a few around the house but 4 or 5 is the most I've spotted.

Was the beer as good as the birding today? If so, and combined with a sunny afternoon, it must have been a day to remember.

Does the Robin Hood at Cragg Vale count as a bird theme?

The kingfishers were a regular fixture on the canal around Eastwood 5 years ago (as they were right outside the Alternative Technology Centre in Hebden Bridge, and a house I rent out up Elphin Brook in Mytholmroyd)then they just seem to vanish all around the same time.
The only place I often see them now is on the river, seen from the bridge that leads to Hebden Bridge train station.

There must be loads but only ones that spring to mind are Martin's Nest (Brighouse), The Falcon (Salterhebble) and The Goose (Ogden).

There used to be a Martin's nest at Elland, not sure if that's still there though. i also remember a pub called the Moorcock out of calderdale towards Oldham that had a Moorhen as the pub sign!

How many remember the Woodcock just off Gibbet Street, part of the Fighting Cocks group of real ale pubs that also included the Red Rooster?
Still extant is the Woodpecker at Shade, which used to sport a lovely Green Woodpecker on the sign when it was a JW Lees tied house.
Incidentally, I have always found the number of Snipe Inns in the Tameside area of Greater Manchester rather appealing, althogh I have not visited any of them.

and The Feathers at King cross

I have fond memories of the Woodcock Phil, used to see bands there, great atmosphere. Suprising how many pubs with bird related names there are locally!

Not forgetting the legendary Ring of Feathers.

Just for the record the beer was good. Abbeydale - Absolution at the Stubbing, Bridestones - Golden ? (can't remember it's full name) at the Hinchcliffe, Boggarts - Rum Porter at the Fox, and Timothy Taylors - Ram Tam at the Cross. Wouldn't suggest doing many more pubs otherwise your bird counts might be a little off.
