Walshaw Dean

Walshaw Dean today. 4 Crossbills and c100 Brambling in the main plantation, 3 Stonechats nearby and plenty of Fieldfares. Dipper and 4 teal at Lower Gorple. Above digi scoped record shots, ps sorry for putting them on moth site by mistake.

Well done on finding them and getting those pics of the two species together Nick. We were watching about 6 Bramblings feeding with a few Chaffinches at Gorpley Clough today, but didn't even attempt a photo, they are so mobile. They were feeding on beechmast on the ground (top path along Gorpley Clough). Never heard of Bramblings going for conifer seeds in the cones.

Are the crossbills up there all year round?

They can be found any time of year but very rare breeding bird in Calderdale. Some years they can be absent altogether. A lot depends on the cone crop both here and on the continent where we suspect our birds come from.
