Baitings and area

I made the very short trip from Rishworth to Baitings today to do litter picking and I saw:

1 Canada goose
6 Golden Plover
2 Oystercatchers
3 Goldcrest
C25 lapwings
2 Mallard
David corrected me on plovers .

RSPB facts says summer visitors arrive in march and April,,, they may be early,,,,, I can't see what else they would be.....

Golden Plover maybe ??? seems the more likely. Where were they Edward, in a field or...

Wheeling around with lapwings,, yes sounds more likely to be plovers, I'll correct it

Hi Edward. Common Sandpipers aren't usually around until mid April.The wintering bird at Ringstone is most unusual, even for the UK. The birds winter in Africa with a few in Southern Europe and they arrive back here in or around mid-April and disappear in September. Local reservoirs are their favoured habitat in Calderdale. Look out for them around the edges of reservoirs especially where there are stone embankments and gravelly shorelines. They have a diagnostic call well worth learning as they often call before you see them ! Hope that's a bit of a help for now. Dave
