All the Canadas had gone by late afternoon as well as the Mallards, probably to roost.
What is it with Mixenden and Goldeneye Dave, either because its sheltered or a good feeding water?

It is well sheltered from the westerlies and I guess its shallower on the west side and probably stony rather than peat. We used to get them at Fly Flatts but I can't recall seeing one there last winter - must check !

My records for Goldeneye - Fly Flatts. 1 on 9th Feb 2017. 1 in March and 1 in Feb 2015. Then not one going back to 1 record in March 2012 and 1 in March 2011 with 3 on 22nd March 2011.
Prior to that they were generally there most winters in all but the harshest conditions.
Our better sites nowadays are Ringstone, Mixi and Cold Edge and perhaps even Cromwell Bottom and Ogden occasionally but they are still scarce at the best of times.
Stranger still is having a summering bird at mixi in 2018 until 7th September at least.

Interesting stuff Dave. I get them each year at Fly Flatts but only 1 or 2 sightings and they usually move on by the next day. Probably as you say with the peat which stops any gull roosts there.
